The International Day of Charity is observed each year on September 5, which commemorates the anniversary of the passing of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. It was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
Charity and charitable work are very important to NPP. We’re more than a business to business marketplace. NPP is owned by non-profit hospitals and a substantial portion of our proceeds help support medical research and care. That’s why our motto is “Save money. Save lives.” Businesses who purchase from NPP not only save on business expenses, they support a greater cause.
Why is there an International Day of Charity?
The International Day of Charity strives to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charitable activities all over the world, whether it’s for individuals or organizations locally, regionally or nationally.
The United Nations wants to strengthen solidarity around the world, particularly to aid the poorest and most vulnerable. The UN believes we have the potential to transform our lives and the planet by providing a framework for philanthropic institutions to help people contribute to the betterment of our world.
NPP and BRI: A special relationship
Since 2001, NPP has contributed more than $130 million to support organizations dedicated to medical research and care, such as Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) in Seattle, Washington.
BRI works to predict, prevent, reverse and cure immune system diseases such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease, allergies and asthma. Because diseases of the immune system are connected, so is BRI’s approach to researching them. BRI believes that a breakthrough involving one immune system disease can lead to progress against them all. Through work with researchers and other institutions worldwide, BRI connects laboratory research to clinical interventions, translating discoveries to real-life application.
